Read the research themes first
Find two or three questions in the site's description that genuinely interest you. Connect one to coursework or a project and explain what you hope to learn. You can acknowledge gaps without pretending to be an experienced researcher.
Give recommenders useful context
Ask someone familiar with your work, give them the relevant program description and deadline, and explain why it fits. Keep a separate record of reference requests, since your own submission may not complete the application.
