- US citizenship, a minimum 3.0 GPA, and study in a NOAA mission-relevant discipline.
- Full-time second-year students in four-year programs; community-college students planning transfer to a four-year program; or third-year students in five-year undergraduate programs.
- Read NOAA's full prospective-scholar requirements before applying; year three is not a blanket rule for four-year-degree juniors.
The scholarship application year and internship summer are different stages. Existing scholars' placement dates are not new-applicant deadlines.
Dates, pay & program timing
NOAA's 2026 recipient announcement gives September 1, 2026–January 31, 2027 for the class-of-2027 scholarship application period. The older overview still displays a closed status, so verify availability with NOAA. No exact cutoff time is confirmed here. The award includes two years of academic support and a later 10-week paid internship.

Make your interest specific: a weather dataset, coastal system, fisheries question, environmental measurement, or relevant social-science problem. Explain what you have already explored and what you want to learn. Do not treat every science course as equally relevant to the same project.
For transfer students, ask your academic adviser to help you document your degree plan accurately. Keep your projected transfer and graduation dates consistent across materials. Also map the scholarship's multi-year commitments against classes and work responsibilities before deciding it fits.
