Our editorial advice · not employer requirements

How to prepare a stronger application

The research statement asks for experience and interests, and first-year students often have little lab work yet. Describe the closest thing you have — a course lab, a data analysis, a science fair project — and name the cancer research questions you want to learn about, so a mentor can see a fit.

Because all majors are welcome, non-biology students should connect their field to cancer research directly: statistics to clinical data, engineering to devices or imaging, public health to prevention. This is our suggestion, not MD Anderson's process.
