Who can apply?

  • Merck's FAQ says interns must be enrolled in a bachelor's, master's or PhD program and plan to return to school after the internship, unless the internship is an academic requirement for graduating.
  • Candidates must be able to commit to full-time work for 10–12 weeks in the summer and hold US work authorization for the length of the internship. Merck states that it does not sponsor visas for internship or co-op roles.
  • The student page sets no minimum class year or GPA. Merck says all majors may apply to roles that fit their skills and asks candidates to confirm each posting's minimum requirements before applying.
Easy to miss

A 2027 posting reviewed says it is effective only until 11:59:59 p.m. on the day before its listed posting end date. Applying on the end date itself can mean applying after the posting has closed.

Dates, pay & program timing

No universal cutoff confirmed

Merck says Future Talent Program internships and co-ops are typically posted in early September, with more roles added through the fall and winter, and that each posting stays up only until a candidate pool is identified. Summer internships run 10–12 weeks and begin in May or June; co-ops run 4–6 months throughout the year. Postings tagged for the 2027 program were live on the review date. The student page publishes no single deadline.

How to apply to Merck

  1. Search Merck's careers site for the FTP2027 tag, which the student page links to, and shortlist postings by division — research labs, manufacturing, human health, animal health or global support functions.
  2. Read each posting's minimum requirements and its posting end date. Merck says cover letters and transcripts are generally not required unless the posting asks for them, so your resume carries most of the application.
  3. Apply as early as you can. Merck says roles stay posted only until a candidate pool is identified, and that it no longer runs a referral process for university recruiting roles, so the online application is the route in.

Our editorial advice · not employer requirements

How to prepare a stronger application

Merck's student page maps each division to majors — chemical and mechanical engineering to manufacturing, biostatistics and health informatics to human health, and so on. Use that mapping to pick postings where your coursework is the obvious fit, then name the specific skill in the first lines of your resume.

Selected candidates get a virtual one-on-one or panel interview about skills, experience and motivation for the role. Prepare a two-minute account of why that team's work — clinical operations, vaccine manufacturing, animal health — interests you; general enthusiasm for pharma sounds thin next to candidates who read the posting.

If you are an international student, resolve work authorization with your designated school official early. Merck says it does not sponsor interns and that you must provide authorization documents before the start date.
