Who can apply?
- Genentech's FAQ says applicants must have completed at least one year of university and be within two years of their last degree. It hires interns at the BS, MS, PharmD and PhD levels, and major requirements vary by internship.
- All internships are paid, so candidates must be legally authorized to work in the US during the internship. Genentech accepts applications from international students but says visa sponsorship support varies by position and department.
- Graduates within two years are eligible for the 10–12 week internship program but not for co-ops, and the FAQ gives one year as the maximum internship length.
Letters of recommendation have to be in your candidate profile when you submit. Genentech states that you cannot upload documents or edit an application afterwards, so a letter that arrives late cannot be added.
Dates, pay & program timing
Genentech says summer internships are posted on an ongoing basis from November until March and that most summer hiring decisions are made by the end of March. On the review date its internship search returned 2027 spring internships in South San Francisco rather than summer roles. The FAQ publishes no single deadline, and it does not say whether the completed-year rule is measured at application or at the start date.

How to apply to Genentech
- Check the completed-year rule against your own timeline. The FAQ requires at least one completed year of university, so a first-year student should confirm in the posting whether that year must be finished by application or by the start date.
- From November, search Genentech's internship listings for your discipline and read the degree and major requirements in each description, which the FAQ says vary by internship.
- Upload any letters of recommendation to your candidate profile at the time you apply. Genentech says documents cannot be uploaded and applications cannot be edited after submission.

Our editorial advice · not employer requirements
How to prepare a stronger application
Because Genentech hires interns at every degree level, an undergraduate is often considered alongside master's and PharmD students. Lead with the specific hands-on work you have done — a technique, an instrument, a dataset — rather than your year, and connect it to the team named in the posting.
Genentech says intern pay depends on degree and year in school, and that interns covering their own housing receive relocation or housing support stipends. If you are offered a place, ask how both apply to you before comparing it with other offers.
