Who can apply?

  • Completed sophomore year before the program begins, currently enrolled at an accredited US college or university, and not graduated with the first bachelor's before the program.
  • Minimum cumulative 3.0 GPA and serious consideration of a PhD or MD-PhD biomedical research career.
  • International students enrolled full time at a US institution may apply and will need appropriate OPT or CPT documentation if accepted.

Dates, pay & program timing

No universal cutoff confirmed

Applications run November 1, 2026–February 3, 2027. The program is May 25–July 30, with a June 15–August 20 option for quarter-system students. The published ten-week stipend is $6,000; housing is the fellow's responsibility.

How to apply to Mayo Clinic

  1. Create the Mayo admissions account and select the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences SURF application.
  2. After submitting the form, upload the personal statement and all unofficial college transcripts in Supplemental Items.
  3. Request two letters from research mentors or science instructors and verify their completion.
