How to approach real estate & property applications

Choose the function before the property type

Brokerage, development, acquisitions, property management, valuation, accounting, research and project management produce different work. Start with the output you want to learn—market surveys, financial models, lease summaries, budgets, project schedules or tenant service—and use evidence that fits it.

Build a transparent local-market sample

Choose one neighborhood or property type and answer a narrow question with public sources. Cite the data, label assumptions and state what you do not know. A one-page analysis you can defend is stronger than a complicated model copied from someone else.

Treat the location as part of eligibility

Many property internships are onsite in a specific city and do not provide housing or relocation assistance. Confirm the full dates, commute, field travel and participation cost before applying. Hybrid never means the office location can be ignored.

Learn the vocabulary, not a script

Understand basic ideas such as rent, vacancy, operating expenses, net operating income, lease terms and property types at the level the role requires. Do not present a classroom exercise as a live deal or claim professional authority you have not earned.

Protect people and information

Properties are homes and workplaces, not only financial assets. Use public or invented data in samples, avoid demographic stereotypes, protect tenant and client information, and follow fair-housing, accessibility and confidentiality rules supplied by the employer.

Real Estate & Property: questions before you apply

Do I need a real-estate major?

Often no. Finance, accounting, business, economics, data, engineering, design and communications students appear across these programs. The selected opening states the required or preferred degree.

Do I need Argus before applying?

Only when the posting requires it. Many roles list Argus as preferred while expecting Excel, communication and analytical preparation. State your actual experience and do not claim familiarity you cannot demonstrate.

Are real-estate internships paid?

Many are, but an evergreen campus page may not publish one company-wide rule. Each guide records what its official source states, and the written offer controls the final amount.
