Who can apply?
- The main program and research-assistant route accept current and recently graduated undergraduate and graduate students. Some staff placements separately prefer juniors, seniors or prior experience.
- Research assistants generally work 10–20 hours weekly remotely, with optional DC office work for local interns. Staff assistants generally work 20–35 hours and can be remote, hybrid or in person depending on the position.
- International students studying in the US need valid F-1 or J-1 status plus appropriate work authorization. Wilson does not sponsor intern visas.
Wilson has two application routes with different duties and qualifications. Sending one generic packet without naming the correct fellows or staff positions can make an otherwise complete application unusable.
Dates, pay & program timing
Spring 2027 applications are due November 6, 2026. Research assistants begin in early January; staff appointments usually follow the academic semester and can vary by office.

How to apply to Wilson Center
- Choose the research-assistant or staff-assistant route and read its separate role descriptions; research applicants should identify relevant 2026–27 fellows without contacting them directly.
- Prepare one PDF containing the route's requested cover letter, resume, three-to-five-page writing sample with bibliography and any transcript requirement.
- Email the completed packet to the official internship address by November 6, following the page's instructions and naming the scholars or staff positions requested in your letter.

Our editorial advice · not employer requirements
How to prepare a stronger application
Use the writing sample to demonstrate source handling, analysis and clean citation. An excerpt is acceptable for research assistants when it still makes sense and includes its bibliography.
Research the specific fellow, policy area or staff office and explain what you can contribute remotely or on site. Do not contact fellows directly because Wilson explicitly says not to.
