Think Tank Internships for College Students

Think tanks hire interns to research policy, edit publications, analyze data, run events, communicate ideas and support the institution itself. This collection compares current official programs without treating every organization, role or political viewpoint as interchangeable.

Sources reviewed How we verify

Choose a type of work, not only a familiar name

Policy research is one route, but these employers also recruit for communications, editing, events, development, government relations, data, technology and operations. Start with the outputs in a current posting: a memo, literature review, hearing summary, dataset, event brief, donor record or public-facing article. Then find the role where a course, campus job, project or previous position gives you adjacent evidence. A generic desire to work in public policy does not tell a reviewer which team can use you.

Use the exact eligibility language

The rules differ sharply. CSIS requires two completed undergraduate years and BPC begins at rising-junior status, while Heritage's current posting prefers juniors but explicitly welcomes students with fewer credits. Brookings, CFR, AEI, Cato, Carnegie and Urban use broader or opening-specific student wording, so we do not invent a freshman, sophomore or junior minimum for them. Confirm GPA, enrollment, work authorization and weekly schedule on the selected role as well as the institution-wide guide.

Treat the writing sample as work evidence

Several current programs request a policy or academic writing sample. Choose a piece with a clear question, a supported conclusion and clean citations, then follow the employer's page limit and bibliography instructions. An excerpt can work when it remains understandable and the program permits it. Do not change the argument merely to imitate an institution's viewpoint, and do not submit work whose authorship or course rules you cannot explain. Reviewers are evaluating research judgment, clarity and accuracy—not just whether the topic sounds important.

Compare the semester as a practical commitment

Current arrangements range from Cato and Heritage's in-person Washington programs to Wilson Center remote research roles and BPC's hybrid week. Pay can be hourly or a term stipend, and nearby intern housing is not necessarily employer-funded housing. Check the full dates against classes, calculate travel and rent, understand when compensation arrives and confirm work authorization before accepting. A prestigious program that cannot fit your academic schedule or budget is not a workable option.

Build a parallel and viewpoint-aware shortlist

Read recent work from each team you consider and understand the institution's mission, methods and perspective. You can compare organizations with different viewpoints while being honest about where you can work professionally and contribute. Apply to several roles whose work you can explain rather than forcing one generic packet across every institution. Continue using official career boards, campus public-policy centers and faculty contacts; this page is a sourced shortlist, not the entire think tank market.

Common questions

Do I have to major in political science?

No universal major applies. Current openings span economics, international affairs, history, data, communications, business, technology and other fields. The selected role's stated qualifications control.

Are think tank internships paid?

Most programs in this focused collection publish pay for at least some or all internships. Where a current overview leaves compensation to the opening, the guide says to check instead of guessing. The written offer controls the final amount.

Can freshmen apply?

Some programs explicitly allow all undergraduates, including Heritage and Wilson Center routes. Others set a later-year rule or leave class year to the opening. Use the guide and current posting rather than assuming one rule for the sector.
