Read the selected research group's expectations, full dates, supervision, and participation conditions. Ask what a student would actually do. A summer in a laboratory is not automatically a clinical placement or a professional credential.
Use only material you have permission to share in application examples. Never include patient information, restricted laboratory records, or private participant data in a public portfolio. Describe your methods and contribution without exposing the underlying confidential material.
Healthcare and biomedical internships range from laboratory research to hospital operations, health analytics, medical device work, and administration. Roles involving patient contact usually carry additional requirements — immunization records, background checks, sometimes specific training — while research and business placements often do not. Knowing which category an opening falls into tells you what the application will actually demand.
Where a placement requires health screening, immunization documentation, a background check or specific certification, those steps have lead times and sometimes costs. Ask what onboarding involves as soon as an offer is in view, and check what your own institution's health service can provide, because chasing records in the last week is a common and avoidable problem.
No. These programs take students across biology, engineering, data science, public health, business and computing. Pre-med students are one part of a much wider pool.
Only in roles designed for it, and those carry extra requirements. Many biomedical and healthcare internships are laboratory, analytics or operations placements with no patient interaction at all.
It can, when you describe it accurately — what you did, how often, and what you learned about how care is delivered. Do not overstate your responsibility, and never include patient details.
