Who can apply?
- Current undergraduate and US citizen or permanent resident; students graduating before the program begins are not eligible.
- No prior research experience or formal earth and ocean science coursework is required.
- Students who already completed an ocean-sciences REU are generally ineligible, with possible exceptions handled by the program.
A small number of remote places appeared in older details; never assume remote participation remains available in a future cycle.
Dates, pay & program timing
The 2026 cohort ran June 15–August 21. It provided $800 per week, campus housing or an allowance, and round-trip travel. That cycle is past; do not reuse its February deadline for 2027.

How to prepare a stronger application
You can demonstrate readiness through data analysis, field observation, physics, chemistry, biology, or programming even without an ocean-science course.
Describe what you want to learn from collective mentorship and full-time research, not only the topic you find interesting.
