Some roles use site-access, export-control, citizenship, clearance, personal-protective-equipment or physical requirements. These terms are not interchangeable. Follow the exact posting and never infer eligibility from the employer's industry alone.
Manufacturing and energy placements may be tied to a plant, laboratory, field site or multi-semester schedule. Confirm shifts, relocation, housing, transportation, authorization and the interaction with your academic calendar before accepting.
Manufacturing, energy and industrial placements are frequently on-site and often require safety training, protective equipment, and sometimes a medical or background screening before your first day. These steps take time. Ask what the onboarding requires as soon as an offer appears, because a start date can slip if a screening or training slot is not booked early.
Alongside traditional operations, many of these employers run internships in renewables, grid modernization, efficiency, emissions measurement and related analytics. If that is where your interest sits, look for those specific teams rather than assuming the whole sector is one thing. Naming the actual area in your application is what makes it read as considered.
Not for every role. These employers also hire into analytics, operations, finance, environmental health and safety, and communications. Engineering-specific roles will say so.
A co-op is usually a longer placement, often multiple terms, sometimes alternating with study. It typically requires coordination with your institution, so check with your academic adviser before committing.
Some site roles are, and it should be stated in the posting. If the schedule is not clear, ask before accepting — it affects everything from transport to whether you can take a summer course.
