Who can apply?
- NRCS describes Pathways opportunities for current students from high school through postgraduate study. It says first- and second-year college students are ideal because they have time to complete the program's 640 work hours; ideal is not an exclusive class-year rule.
- Positions may be part time or full time and are announced through USAJOBS. The individual announcement controls the degree, coursework, citizenship or work-authorization, location, documents and grade-level requirements.
- Successful completion can create eligibility for noncompetitive conversion, but the fact sheet does not promise a permanent job. Candidates must still satisfy the program and position requirements.
NRCS calls first- and second-year students ideal, not exclusively eligible. This record therefore does not turn that preference into a guaranteed accepted-year range.
Dates, pay & program timing
NRCS publishes openings on USAJOBS rather than one annual application window, and its fact sheet warns that an announcement may remain open for only five business days. The internships are paid and require 640 work hours. Check each announcement for its schedule, salary, duty location and closing time.

How to apply to USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service
- Read the NRCS Pathways fact sheet, then use its USAJOBS route to look for current NRCS student announcements. Save searches and alerts because some windows last only five business days.
- Treat the federal announcement as the binding checklist. Match its education, coursework, location, work schedule and eligibility sections to your record before preparing the federal resume and documents.
- Submit every required item through USAJOBS before the announcement's exact closing time. Save the announcement number and confirmation because the public listing may disappear after closing.

Our editorial advice · not employer requirements
How to prepare a stronger application
Connect your interest to work NRCS actually does: soil measurement, plant systems, GIS, watershed or habitat work, landowner service or field data. A course laboratory, campus garden, mapping exercise or environmental project can be useful when described accurately.
Federal resumes often need more detail than a one-page campus resume. Follow the announcement's instructions on dates, hours, duties and transcripts rather than automatically uploading your private-sector version.

Add a stage & next actionUSDA Natural Resources Conservation Service: questions before applying
Are USDA NRCS Pathways internships paid?
Yes. The NRCS fact sheet describes Pathways internships as paid positions.
Is the program only for freshmen and sophomores?
No. NRCS says first- and second-year college students are ideal because they have more time to complete 640 hours, but it describes a broader current-student pathway.
Where do I apply?
Apply to a current NRCS Pathways announcement on USAJOBS. The fact sheet itself is guidance, not an application.
