Who can apply?
- Applicants must be working toward an undergraduate or graduate degree and be eligible to work in the United States. Graduates may qualify if they finished school within six months of the internship start.
- The internships are for candidates who have not worked professionally as staff journalists. For reporting, one or two previous internships are strongly recommended rather than stated as a universal minimum.
- Reporting applicants generally need a valid driver's license and access to a reliable car; the Editorial Pages exception and the no-car rules for design, digital and editing tracks are stated on the official application page.
Do not send the same generic portfolio to every track. The official instructions differ, and reporting applicants can also miss a practical gate if they overlook the driver's-license and car requirement.
Dates, pay & program timing
Summer 2027 applications are open through November 15, 2026 at 11:59 p.m. PST. The Times says applicants will be notified by May 1 and summer interns are expected to start May 24, June 7 or June 21. The internships are paid, but the reviewed 2027 summer pages do not publish one hourly rate or one universal end date.

How to apply to Los Angeles Times
- Choose the exact newsroom track before building the packet. Reporting, visual journalism, design, digital, data and editing each ask for different evidence, and the general internship page links to separate applications.
- Assemble that track's materials. The reporting route asks for a cover letter, a resume with three references, a one-page personal essay and up to six work samples; other tracks replace or refine the portfolio requirement.
- Submit through the official L.A. Times application by November 15 at 11:59 p.m. PST. Open every link before submitting and keep a copy of the packet and confirmation.

Our editorial advice · not employer requirements
How to prepare a stronger application
For reporting clips, favor work that shows original reporting, source development, verification and deadline judgment. Add a short note when a piece was collaborative so an editor can see exactly what you reported, wrote, photographed or produced.
For design, visual, audience or data work, sequence a small portfolio around decisions rather than decoration. Explain the audience or reporting question, the raw material you started with, the tool or format you chose and how the published result made the story clearer.

Yes. The official application page calls the 2027 internships paid, but it does not publish one summer rate for every track.
