Who can apply?
- Interns and co-ops must be actively enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree-granting program at an accredited college or university in the United States.
- Applicants need at least one full academic year completed or sophomore status and a cumulative GPA of at least 2.8.
- Students must be legally authorized to work in the United States without employment sponsorship for the internship or co-op period. Each opening can add degree, skills, schedule and location requirements.
Amtrak's externship route is for recent graduates and has different qualifications. Do not use its graduate rule to bypass the enrollment requirement for internships and co-ops.
Dates, pay & program timing
Amtrak says intern, extern and co-op positions are available year-round. It hires and onboards interns for an academic-year term from August through April and a summer term from May through August; co-op timing follows university requirements. All interns and co-ops are paid at competitive hourly rates, but the central page does not publish one rate or deadline.

How to apply to Amtrak
- Use Amtrak's official interns and co-ops page to search current openings by keyword and location. Decide whether the summer, academic-year or co-op schedule fits your degree plan.
- Check the 2.8 GPA, completed-year, enrollment and work-authorization gates first, then match the selected posting's department and city to your coursework and availability.
- Apply through Amtrak Careers under that role's deadline, save the job ID and confirmation, and keep the description for interview preparation after the listing closes.

How to prepare a stronger application
Passenger rail connects engineering, operations and public service. Choose one real constraint—safety, reliability, accessibility, procurement, customer information or capacity—and explain a project or job where you worked with a similar trade-off.
Location belongs in the application decision. Amtrak says roles are department-based and not every function exists in every listed city, so do not present six cities as interchangeable if only one is practical for you.

When does Amtrak hire interns?
Amtrak describes year-round roles with onboarding for an August–April academic-year term and a May–August summer term; each posting controls its own deadline.
