Who can apply?

  • Applicants must be current undergraduates with at least junior standing or graduate students in an accredited US architecture, interior design, urban planning, landscape architecture or named engineering program.
  • Applicants must remain enrolled in Fall 2027, be available for a paid Summer 2027 internship and be legally authorized to work in the United States. SmithGroup says applicants should have a GPA of 3.0 or better.
  • The application requires a cover letter about commitment to inclusion, a resume and, for architecture, landscape architecture and interior design students, a link to an online portfolio.
Easy to miss

This is not a scholarship with an optional internship: SmithGroup says the paid Summer 2027 internship is a program requirement. The official page also displays inconsistent time-zone equivalents, so do not wait until deadline day.

How to apply to SmithGroup

  1. Confirm your program, standing, Fall 2027 enrollment, Summer 2027 availability, GPA guidance and US work authorization against the official page.
  2. Choose the discipline-specific application route and prepare the inclusion-focused cover letter, resume and portfolio link where required.
  3. Submit before December 6 rather than relying on the inconsistent displayed time, then save the confirmation and a copy of every document.

Our editorial advice · not employer requirements

How to prepare a stronger application

Use the cover letter to show a specific action you took to advance inclusion in a campus, community or AEC setting, what changed and what you learned. Avoid a list of values without evidence.

If a portfolio is required, make the link public to reviewers, identify your contribution to team projects and connect at least one project to accessible or community-centered design decisions.
