Who can apply?

  • The Software Engineer Embedded Systems I (Intern) posting requires current enrollment in an associate's or bachelor's program in computer science, data science, statistics, applied mathematics or a related field, and expected continued enrollment after the internship.
  • That posting also requires proficiency in C with embedded Linux shown through a project, working knowledge of operating systems, routing or networking, and experience with Python, Bash or Jenkins.
  • Cisco posts separate I, II and PhD-level intern roles within the program, each with its own degree level and skills; the I-level posting is the one reviewed in detail here.
Easy to miss

Cisco says these postings advertise potential opportunities and that the exact role may not be open today. Applying puts you in consideration; it does not confirm a vacancy.

No universal cutoff confirmed

Cisco describes the Product Internship Program as a 12-week summer experience, and the reviewed posting is tagged for 2027. It says the posting advertises potential opportunities that may not be open today and that applications are accepted until further notice. It lists state salary ranges of $44,000 to $185,000 that are not specific to interns, so confirm the actual figure with the recruiter.

How to apply to Cisco

  1. Browse Cisco's internship and co-op listings and choose the product-internship role whose level — I, II or PhD — matches your degree and experience.
  2. Check the posting's minimum qualifications; the embedded role, for example, expects C and embedded Linux demonstrated through a project.
  3. Apply knowing the posting may represent a future opening; Cisco says a representative may contact you directly if a relevant position opens.

Our editorial advice · not employer requirements

How to prepare a stronger application

For the embedded and networking roles, one project below the application layer — a driver, a kernel module, a router lab, a microcontroller build — outweighs several web apps. Explain how you debugged it without a friendly error message.

Associate's-degree eligibility is uncommon among large technology employers. Community college students should say so plainly and point to the lab or project work that shows the listed skills. This is our suggestion, not a Cisco screening rule.
